Swooning in a Big Way - Martin Margiela F/W Couture '14

Time for another Maison Martin Margiela post!  I am always blown away by MMM first from an aesthetic perspective and secondly because their long-standing philosophy has been to up cycle or repurpose fabrics.  This new collection uses bits of antique garments and their own samples to stunning effect.  Also incorporated are mid century "Japanese Souvenir" Bomber Jackets sourced from around the globe.  You know how much I love a good patchwork…..

Skirt is patchwork of embroidery samples and took 80 hrs. to make! 

Again, embroidery samples and the cashmere coat is patched together samples from trade shows.

Part of the bomber jacket is from 1945 and the skirt is constructed of embroider samples in metal

Part of the bodice is from antique - 1870! - french embroideries acquired at auction.

On Green Eco Services I came across artist John Petrey whom made the fantastic dresses shown here out of recycled cast-offs.  I've been wildly enamored of trash converting art since my BFA days, but you really must see Mr. Petrey's work - The Dress Series is a standout in any medium.  Contemplating the use of vintage signage and roofing composite materials as female adornment is an engaging exercise. 

In person I would be very hard pressed not to defy the cardinal  rule of "don't touch the art", wouldn't you?

Of Latex & Geodes

Wow!  F/W 2013 Couture Season has brought some gorgeous things into the fashion world again and as usual, I loved the Maison Martin Margiela collection.  They struck a cord with my little eco-centric heart by up cycling vintage fabrics, embroidery and dresses, but what really got me were the latex covered shirts, jeans and boots and this:

  A Geode vest!  How amazing is that?  Not comfortable.  Not quiet.  But very, very cool.
As for the latex - it looks terrific but is totally unwearable down here in uber swampy southern Houston and probably most other climes also.  'T would be akin to one of those icky "sweat suits" from the 70s where you zip yourself in from head to toe to produce a lose-5-pounds-sweat.  
Just the sci-fi disco dominatrix boots, maybe?
